Festival and symposium
In the autumn of 2001 the Institute presented a festival and symposium on the Italian Jewish experience in Los Angeles, running from the twenty fourth of October to the fifth of November. The program combined films, music, celebration and scholarly discussion, and was produced with a group of academic and cultural partners.
Workshops
A workshop series on traditional Italian instruments and dances was announced for the autumn and winter of 2000. Instrument sessions covered the tambourine, the jaw's harp, the friction drum and other instruments of southern Italian oral tradition, while the dance sessions ranged from the pizzica tarantata to the tarantella and the tammurriata, and included dances of northern Italy.
Research and travel
In the spring of 2001 the Institute's director travelled to Budapest for the annual meeting of the international ballad commission and for a second meeting of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore, to which she had been nominated for the executive slate. She then continued to the Licenza valley in Lazio to carry out a field project on the folklore of archaeological sites, collecting stories told about ancient places.
Course
The Institute announced a public course on oral history, field collecting and Italian cultural resources in Los Angeles, taught by its director over four sessions in February and March 2001.
