Why we program
Culture that is meant to be experienced
The Institute has built a reputation for careful programming on the oral, folk and regional cultures of Italy, subjects that are often little known and yet of real importance to an immigrant community. These traditions are meant to be heard and seen, not only read about, so the Institute stages them in public.
Programs are usually created with partners. Working alongside cultural and educational institutions in Los Angeles allows the Institute to reach a general, multicultural audience and to present difficult or unfamiliar material with respect.

Partners in the work
Public programs are built with others. The Institute has worked with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Los Angeles, the cultural office of the Italian consulate, with the University of California, Los Angeles, with the Craft and Folk Art Museum, and with the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, among others.
Some programs have grown straight out of a collecting campaign. An exhibition of St. Joseph's Day tables, for instance, began as fieldwork and ended as a public presentation, showing how community research can become a shared cultural event.
