Italian Los Angeles
A guide to a city's Italian life
The Institute's Italian Los Angeles project is building a guide to Italian resources in the greater Los Angeles area. It covers markets, restaurants, businesses and artisans, cultural and educational institutes and associations, festivals and celebrations, historic sites, human resources and bibliography.
The guide is intended for anyone interested in Italian life and history in the city: residents, visitors, students, scholars, business people and others. Interns help to research it, to contact the people listed and to check that each entry is accurate.
What interns do
- Explore Italian Los Angeles through site visits and interviews
- Learn oral history and field collecting methods
- Compile and verify entries for the resource guide
- Help with the archive, from cataloguing to transcription
- Assist at public programs and workshops
Academic support
Several university departments have supported the project through student internships, including the department of world arts and cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles, the department of anthropology at California State University, Northridge, and departments of Italian. These placements have generally been unpaid and arranged for course credit or as volunteer experience.
Applying
Students who would like to intern with the Institute should write to the Executive Director with a short account of their interests, their department and the time they can give. Mention whether you are seeking course credit, since that shapes how a placement is arranged.
