ORAL HISTORY, ORAL CULTURE, AND ITALIANS IN AMERICA

Los Angeles: Points of Interest

Los Angeles is one of the nation’s most exciting cities, known for its dazzling entertainment, its world-class culture, its famous shopping areas, its innovative restaurants, its rich number of ethnic enclaves, its ideal weather, and its spectacular scenery. Within walking distance of your hotel, is UCLA, world-renowned university and host of the AIHA conference. A short drive away brings you to:

:: The Getty Center, the home of the premier art collection of J. Paul Getty.

:: The Historic Italian Hall, a proud reminder of the strong Italian presence in early Los Angeles. The future museum setting celebrates Italian American contributions to the life and culture of Los Angeles.

:: Watts Towers, single-handedly built by Simon Rodia, an Italian American (from the Campania region), are a complex set of separate sculptural pieces built on a residential lot in the community of Watts. Two of the towers rise to a height of nearly 100 feet. The sculptures are constructed from steel pipes and rods, wrapped with wire mesh, coated with mortar and embedded with pieces of porcelain, tile and glass.

:: Universal Studios Hollywood/CityWalk, where you can attend concerts by the biggest names in pop music and tour the sound stages of Hollywood movies.

:: Hollywood and Melrose, where small dance and music clubs present the latest and the newest names in pop music.

:: The Malibu beaches offer great views and restaurants.

:: The Miracle Mile, home of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the La Brea tar pits (where thousands of dinosaurs met their doom), the Craft and Folk Art Museum, and the Petersen Automotive Museum

:: Santa Monica and Venice, the site of great beaches, beautiful landscapes and high-end shops.

:: The Los Angeles Music Center, home of the Los Angeles Symphony, the Los Angeles Opera, touring ballet companies and Broadway shows, and innovative professional theater – joined by the new Disney Concert Center, designed by Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry.

(Other tourist sites include: the Sunset Strip, Farmer’s Market, Hollywood Bowl, Griffith Park, and Disneyland in Anaheim, approximately 35 miles away).
